The security of America lies in a citizenry in whose minds and hearts is ingrained a true understanding of and love for those ideals and principles upon which the nation was founded; a citizenry awake to the duties of citizenship and willing to perform these duties even at the cost of great personal sacrifice. Americanism work is largely educational in character and is usually divided into three phases:
Home Americanism Essay Contest A program of the Elks' Grand Lodge Fraternal Committee, this contest is geared towards students in 5th through 8th grades to promote patriotism among young people.
Eligible participants must be Students enrolled in the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th grade at the time of the contest. Essay length is not to exceed words.
Summit Elks Lodge Americanism Committee is holding an Essay Contest, open to all students now enrolled in the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th Grade. Click through to read more. Announcing the Elks Americanism Essay Contest. The theme of the contests is "Why Our Veterans Are America's Heroes." This contest is open to all students enrolled in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eight grades. The Americanism Committe contacts local schools with information about our yearly Americanism Essay contest which is open to students in the 5th 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The theme will change each year, and our entrants will be judged on originality, development of theme, and the mechanics and neatness of their essay.
Essay must be typed or legibly printed in ink. Also, Essay must be submitted as written or typed by the entrant. Essay must be submitted for judging to the Elks Lodge nearest to the address of the entrant. Participant must be identified by name, grade, school attending and sponsoring Elks Lodge on the Essay.
Plaques will be sent to the respective State Associations for presentation to the winning Local Lodges.
All applications must include the coverpage to identify the student and local Elks Lodge it is submitted to. I am but its shadow. I am whatever you make me; nothing more. I am your belief in yourself, your dream of what a people may become.

It has an answer for every question of duty. It has a solution for every doubt and perplexity. It has a word of good cheer for every hour of gloom or despondency.
It speaks of victories, and sometimes of reverses, on the sea and on the land. It speaks of patriots and heroes among the living and the dead.
